Wives offer organs to two men facing Kidney failure, but blood groups don’t match; read what happened next

In a first-of-its-kind case of kidney swapping in the city, two persons Nagraj and Srinivas suffering from the end-stage renal disease have got a new lease on life.

The wives of both patients had agreed to donate their kidneys to their husbands to carry out transplantation. But their blood groups did not match as Nagraj was B+ and his wife Manjula was A+, while Srinivas was A+ and his wife leelavathi was B+. It was decided that Leelavathi would donate her kidney to Nagraj and in turn, Manjula would donate hers to Srinivas. After obtaining mutual concern, the kidneys were successfully transplanted at Suguna Hospital.

According to Dr. Sanjay S, a nephrologist at the hospital, who led the team that conducted the surgeries, a rare feature of this transplant was that Nagraj was suffering from a disorder called autosomal dominant polycystic disease in the other kidney which had increased its size considerably and also caused internal bleeding.” Because of this, there was no space for the transplanted kidney. We did a procedure to correct this and together the two kidneys weighed around 4.5 kgs,” he said.

“I feel I have reborn. I am grateful to my wife Manjula, Srinivas’s family, and the doctors of Suguna Hospital.

I have undergone three major surgeries but now am recovering. My kidneys were too large compared to a normal person’s and my single kidney weighed 2.5kgs,” said T Nagraj(44), who is a barber.

Srinivas(40), a farmer said the kidney swap came to him as a godsend as his health problem had drained him eco-nomically. “I had thought I won’t live for long but my wife was kind enough to donate her kidney for my sake. Unfortunately our blood groups didn’t match. We went from one hospital to another for treatment but nothing and we only lost a lot of money Now I have got my life back,” he said.
